Track Visitors with Tagging Pixels: Boost Your Campaigns
Learn how to create Tagging Pixels and add them to your website. This allows you to track the behavior of your visitors and carry out targeted marketing campaigns.
With the Tagging Pixel, you can tag contacts when they visit your website. Technically speaking, this is a 1x1 pixel image file. This can be placed invisibly on any type of website.
The call of this pixel is tracked or registered accordingly. A corresponding tag is then assigned to the contact in KlickTipp. This happens completely unnoticed by the user.
The Tagging Pixel works via a cookie in the contact's browser. The cookie is set or updated as soon as the contact clicks on a link in a KlickTipp email. This also takes place on the confirmation and thank you page.
The cookie in the browser allows the contact to be clearly assigned. The Tagging Pixel is loaded on a website and compared with the cookie in the browser. The tag is then assigned to the contact in KlickTipp.
The name of the cookie is individual for each customer and is valid for one year.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Create Tagging Pixels
- Click on → Automation → Tagging Pixel → New Tagging Pixel.
- Assign a name and then click on → Create Tagging Pixel.
- Optionally select an additional manual tag. Decide whether the Tagging Pixel should also be used for future recipients. This applies to contacts that will only be written to the Contact Cloud later.
- If you do not want the Tagging Pixel to trigger immediately, you can use a delay. Select the number of seconds by which the triggering should be delayed.
- Copy the code for the Tagging Pixel to the clipboard.
- Finally, click on → Save.
Inserting the Tagging Pixels on Your Website
You insert the Tagging Pixel via the code editor or an HTML module on your website. This can vary depending on the system. Here we explain it using the example of a WordPress page.
- Open the desired page in your WordPress admin area. Call up the code editor by clicking on the three dots at the top right.
- Paste the Tagging Pixel from the clipboard into the editor and click → Update or → Publish.
- Open the page in the browser and right-click. Then select → Show Page Source Text.
- Type CTRL or COMMAND + F and enter → Pix in the search field. You will now see several results with this string. The Tagging Pixel is placed at the top of the page. It therefore usually appears among the first results.
Testing the Tagging Pixels
To test clearly, we recommend deleting all previous test contacts. Create a new contact for the test, e.g. by opening Firefox or another browser. It is important that you can easily view and manage the cookies separately. First delete any existing cookies from KlickTipp. In Firefox, you can view the cookies in the → Settings → Privacy & Security section.
- Create a test contact in KlickTipp. To do this, click on → Contacts → Manage Contacts → New Contact.
- Enter the email address and click on → Add Contact.
- Create an email or use an existing one. Add a link to the website with the Tagging Pixel. Send this email to your contact as an individual email (Enterprise only). You can also send it via a test campaign with an email action.
- The contact is taken directly to the page via this link. This allows you to quickly ensure that the Tagging Pixel is recognized and triggers. For the test, make sure that the page is opened in Firefox or your chosen test browser.
- Then check the cookies that have been set by KlickTipp.
- Click on the test contact in the contact overview and check the contact history. This should contain entries that the Tagging Pixel has been triggered.
Now you can track the behavior of your visitors and carry out targeted marketing campaigns. Test carefully to ensure that the pixels work correctly. Use the data obtained to optimize your marketing strategy and make it even more successful.
