A/B Test Your Newsletter for Sales Optimization

In this article, we’ll show you how to A/B test your email campaigns based on sales. This method allows you to compare two product prices and determine which one generates more sales. KlickTipp’s conversion pixel makes this process simple and effective.

Please note, this feature is exclusive to the Enterprise version.

To get started, you'll need at least two shopping carts with different prices, each linked to its own thank-you page. On these pages, insert a customized conversion pixel that tracks the specific price being tested. This setup will allow you to measure and compare the performance of each cart at different price points.

Good to Know

At the end of the A/B test, the winning variant is determined and sent permanently. Open rates continue to be tracked even after the test ends. These are included in the statistics. As a result, the leading variant may change over time.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Setting Up Your A/B Test

  • Create a new newsletter. In this post, you'll find a step-by-step guide.
  • Select the → Perform A/B Test  option.
  • Set a test size in %.
  • Under → Period,  select at least 3 hours. This allows enough time for contacts to open the message and purchase your product.
  • In the drop-down menu under → Winner,  select the option → Variant With the Most Unique Conversions.
  • Choose the Email Builder or the Rich Text Editor.
  • Click on → Create Newsletter.

Customizing A/B Test Variants

  • Create and edit as many A/B test variants as you like. You can create them flexibly in the drag & drop editor or in the rich text editor.
  • Name the variant and copy settings from another email if necessary.
  • Adjust all sender settings.
  • Under → Advanced Settings,  you can deactivate link tracking if needed. Optionally, enable Gmail link display. Independently of this, you can define the text for the preheader. This appears in the email clients as a preview before the actual text.
  • Click → Save and continue.
  • Edit the A/B test variant in the selected editor. Insert the link to the first order page with the price to be tested.
  • Then click on → Save.

Finalizing and Running the A/B Test

  • A pop-up window will notify you if any settings are incomplete. Check the variant and start the A/B test.
  • Create a new variant or continue editing the current one.
  • In the menu on the left, you will see the two items → Design  and → Check. Click on → Design to return to the selected editor. If you select → Review,  several options appear.
  • You will receive an infographic on the spam score based on the selected signature.
  • Display an email preview in the browser.
  • Send a preview email to a defined email address.
  • You need at least two variants for the A/B test. Optionally create additional variants via the left menu under → A/B test Variants . You can either duplicate these or create new ones using the editor buttons.
  • In the second variant, add the link to your second order page where the product is offered at a different price.

Locating and Creating Conversion Pixels

  • You can find the conversion pixel on the left under → Setup & Recipient.  Copy it to the clipboard. Then paste it into a text editor.
  • Enter your price in whole numbers and without currency at the end of the URL before the quotation marks instead of the “1”. Never use numbers with commas, as this is a URL. In the code example you can see the prices 45 and 60€.
  • For example, you can use these prices:
<img src='https://klick.staging-beta.click/pic/do7zbq1ozbza/45' height='1' width='1' />
<img src='https://klick.staging-beta.click/pic/do7zbq1ozbza/60' height='1' width='1' />

Modifying and Using Conversion Pixels

  • Paste the clipboard a second time and change the number as in the first URL. Enter the second, i.e. the other price to be tested for the product.
  • Insert the modified conversion pixel in the header of the thank you pages.
  • Click on → Shipping  on the left. Select a sending time from the drop-down menu.
  • The newsletter is sent. On the left in the menu under → Overview  you will see an overview of all key figures.
  • If you click on → A/B Test Emails,  all test results are displayed in detail.
